Saturday is Kujyaku (Peacock) Curry Day 🍛
Normally my younger son runs out and buys it for me for which I give him a couple bucks as a tip.
Today I went to fetch the curry myself.
The shop is about the size of a very modest walk-in closet, hidden at the back of what I think was a parking lot just next door to a Thai restaurant. There are three cubbyholes that are currently occupied by take-out joints. In the past, there was a small gardening shop and florist which opened in 2014, but closed last year. There was a greengrocer about five years ago, too. A few years back, a muffin shop that lasted as long as a soap bubble. It was one of those places that just don't permit businesses to succeed. That Japanese call them kimon (鬼門, lit. the northeast quarter which is where demons are believed to enter).
And then Kujyaku appeared. The small pop-up like shop is a satellite of a larger restaurant in Tenjin. (I think in the Parco Bldg.) Anyways, Kujyaku is still going strong three years or so since opening. They usually sell out by one in the afternoon. Thanks to Kujyaku’s success, two more take-out shops have opened recently, the most promising of which is a Vietnamese sandwich joint. I’m surprised Banh Mi have taken so long to catch on in Japan despite the appeal of Vietnamese food in general. Will be back soon to check that out.
Tiki Back Alley Curry
「Love & Peace」
「Max
